8 Playing to Win

WHERE WE PLAY > Leadership

PLAYING
TO WIN
...INSTEAD OF
PLAYING NOT TO LOOSE

The Winning Strategy
Playing to Win requires a positive attitude of the Leadership
The most important aspect of “Playing to Win” is the attitude to failure and error
The “Blame Game” is definitely the wrong way and the route towards “Playing not to Lose”
A winning team will use failure as a source of Learning and an opportunity to help each other
A winning strategy requires skilled and empowered employees
"FAIL OFTEN SO YOU CAN SUCCEED SOONER" is the slogan of a Califonian based development company. It shows how important it is to accept failures in your culture, because Failure and Success are only the two sides of the same coin. If you are afraid of failure, you can never achieve great things. Unfortunately, most companies punish failure much more than they appreciate success. And since we humans are in the same mode of survival, our Amygdala constantly hijacks us to prevent failure and loss. If you, as a company, do not actively move the mind's eye of your employees, teams and fellowers to the potential positive outcome, they will by nature respond only reactive with "Playing not to Lose".
ADJUST your SAILS
JOHN MAXWELL:
“The pessimist complains about the wind. The optimist expects it to change. The leader adjusts the sails.”
PLAYING TO WIN requires adjusting the sails so you can fly fast towards victory. However, organizations often don't appreciate to change targets or strategies once a BUDGET is made.

CHANGE before its too LATE
KPI’s, Budgets and Bonuses are very powerful tools, but can also be a source of problems and the reason for slow changes.
Goals are important for the direction of organizations, but they must be able to change goals when external factors change or when new insights provide better solutions.

PLAYING to WIN
  1. “PLAYING to WIN” instead of “PLAYING not to LOSE” requires all 9 Leadership Styles
  2. It requires a positive Learning Culture --> The Learning Organization
  3. It requires a positive culture towards Failure, where the reaction to failure is to learn rather than blame
  4. Such organizations can exceed their limits because everybody will automatically aim high
  5. PLAYING to WIN is also much more FUN and Healthy
